Regional meeting of the European Union Heads of Mission in Central Asia, Tashkent (Uzbekistan)

A regional meeting of the European Union Heads of Mission in Central Asia will be held in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, on 28 and 29 July 2008. This meeting, chaired by Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the French Minister of State for European Affairs, will bring together all the ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union. The meeting will be attended by Pierre Morel, the EU's Special Representative for Central Asia as well as representatives from the European Commission.

Following the adoption of the European Union's Strategy for Central Asia, this meeting will focus on the internal, economic and social situation of the five countries that make up this region (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan), the role of the EU in Central Asia, implementation of the EU Strategy for Central Asia and particularly the Strategy's initiatives on regional issues (education, water and the rule of law).

The meeting will help to prepare the upcoming meetings under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union in relation to the region, notably the 1st EU-Central Asia Forum on security issues (Paris, 18 September 2008).
