On July 8, the ECOFIN Council, chaired by Christine Lagarde, French Minister for the Economy, Industry and Employment, approved the legal acts that will allow Slovakia to adopt the single currency on 1 January 2009.

The European Parliament was consulted and pronounced itself in favour of this request on 17 June. The Heads of State and Government of the European Union gave their political agreement to Slovakia’s accession to the euro zone at the European Council meeting on 19 and 20 June.

Slovakia thus joins the original euro zone countries (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain) and more recent members (Greece 2001, Slovenia 2007, Malta and Cyprus 2008). With Slovakia’s adoption of the euro, 325 million people in 16 states will be using the single currency in 2009.
