Declaration by the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the explosion on 6 July in Abkhazia (Georgia)

  • On: 07.07.2008

The Presidency of the European Union expresses its deep concern following the explosion that killed four people on Sunday 6 July in Abkhazia, Georgia. The Presidency particularly deplores the death of an interpreter working to further peace on behalf of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG).

Faced with the increasing number of incidents and the rise in tensions in the conflict zones in Georgia, the Presidency of the European Union once again calls on the parties to show the utmost restraint and resume dialogue as quickly as possible in order to avoid a further escalation of violence.

The Presidency of the European Union reaffirms its full support for the UNOMIG which plays an important stabilising role in the conflict zone, as recalled by Security Council Resolution 1808 of 15 April 2008. It urged the parties to cooperate fully with the UNOMIG.
